Promoting Graduation and School Achievement for Youth with Disabilities: Strategies for Parents. Curriculum Trainer's Manual
ALLIANCE National Parent Technical Assistance Center at PACER
This curriculum was developed in response to a need expressed by parents and parent groups across the country. It is intended to help parents learn strategies that will encourage their youth to remain in school and to graduate with peers. In preparation for presenting this workshop, you will need to have a clear understanding of state initiatives that address school completion for children with disabilities, as well as specific diploma options offered in your state. If you are not familiar with these options, your state's Department of Education website should have print materials that will help you to understand and present effectively. The intended audience for this training is all parents of youth with disabilities, including families who are from racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, or cultural minority backgrounds or otherwise underserved and underrepresented. Appended are: (1) Reference List; (2) Research Citations by Slide; (3) Resource List for Families; (4) School Completion Action Plan; (5) Sample Evaluation Form; (6) Alternative Schooling: Questions to Consider; and (7) Handouts. Individual sections contain resources and references. [This paper was developed in collaboration with the Regional Parent Technical Assistance Centers.]
