The purpose of this updated manual is to define and describe standardized nursing languages, highlight how nursing languages are a part of the nursing process, and illustrate through case examples how nursing languages are used in school nursing practice. This manual also summarizes the history and development of three nursing classifications, the NANDA-I Nursing Diagnoses Classification, the Nursing Interventions Classification, and the Nursing Outcomes Classification, explains how these three languages have been linked together, and gives an overview of the taxonomies that organize these nursing languages. Finally, the Minimum Data Set for School Nurses is introduced as well as the importance of using standardized languages in electronic school health records. As school nurses face the challenge of meeting the health care needs of the students they serve, it is essential to continually update knowledge and skills that will best serve the specialty in the years ahead.
