National CARES Mentoring Movement: A Mentoring & Literacy Guide
Hawkins, B. Denise
National Institute for Literacy
The National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM) is a call to commitment and action to the Black community to mentor its young, providing guidance and encouragement to build happy, productive and self-sustaining lives. Objectives include: (1) Connecting vulnerable Black youngsters with caring adults; (2) Communicating to at-risk youth that their community adults care about them and will help them succeed; (3) Increasing literacy skills; (4) Increasing high school graduation rates among Black students by 10 percent annually; and (5) Ending violence in the Black community and associated over-incarceration. This brochure presents the objectives, mission and goals of the NCMM, dispels myths about mentoring, and describes how one can get involved in mentoring, particularly to foster literacy and a love of reading among children.
