Everyday Learning about Fears and Anxieties. Everyday Learning Series. Volume 4, Number 2
Roe, Diana
Early Childhood Australia
The "Everyday Learning" series has been developed to focus attention on the everyday ways in which children can be supported in their growth and development. It is for all those who are involved in children's development and learning, including early childhood professionals in all children's services, parents, grandparents and others with an ongoing responsibility for young children. Many parents are concerned when their young child is worried or upset. "Everyday Learning about Fears and Anxieties" provides suggestions for the best ways to respond to these situations. The author addresses a range of common situations to explain how parents can deal with issues such as: separation anxiety; changes in routines; or fear of imagined creatures. Using a range of examples--from very young babies to children starting school--she shows how anxieties can be overcome and resilience increased by encouraging children to talk about their fears, solve problems themselves, and make choices about aspects of their lives over which they do have some control. This book will give all parents and carers additional resources to help young children feel safe and secure in a sometimes-frightening world. It is divided into five parts. The first part, Introduction, presents: (1) What Causes Fear and Anxiety in Young Children?; and (2) Signs of Anxiety. The second part, Babies, continues with: (3) Babies' Common Fears; and (4) Helping Babies Cope with Fears. Next, the third part of the book, Toddlers, provides: (5) Toddlers' Common Fears; and (6) How to Help Toddlers Feel Secure and Safe. The fourth part, Preschoolers, follows with: (7) The Fears of Preschool Children; (8) Worries about Death and Sickness; and (9) How Can We Help Anxious Preschoolers? Finally, the fifth section, And So to School ..., concludes with: (10) Encouraging Resilience and Helping Children Cope; and (11) When to Get Help. Also included are: Books to Share with Children about Fears; and Books and Resources for Parents and Carers.
