Babysitting Beginnings. Leader's Guide [and] Member's Guide.
Mincemoyer, Claudia; Scholl, Jan; Gregory, Debra
Using an experiential learning approach, these guides for 4-H leaders and members detail a 6-session program, "Babysitting Beginnings," to teach sixth through twelfth graders the responsibilities and skills involved in babysitting. Participants develop a babysitting tool kit for future use with children and a babysitting portfolio, a collection of materials relating to babysitting. The leader's guide's introductory section presents an experiential learning model, discusses how early and later adolescents learn, and describes how the Babysitting Beginnings program teaches life skills in addition to babysitting techniques, such as making decisions, communicating with others, and problem solving. Six training sessions are presented in the leader's and the member's guides: (1) babysitting responsibilities; (2) the business of babysitting; (3) understanding children; (4) fun with children; (5) sitting safely; and (6) sharing tool kits and portfolios. Each training session provides introductory material regarding the topic of the session, activity suggestions, and needed materials. The leader's guide concludes with a 4-H babysitting kit evaluation form and a certificate of achievement. (KB)
