Include Me: A Universal Approach to Ropes Challenge Courses.
Fink-Miller, Karinsue
This paper offers suggestions for making ropes challenge courses accessible to individuals with special needs. Federal legislation requires that programs be updated to be inclusive of individuals with disabilities. A transdisciplinary approach is suggested for promoting a better and safer program based on input from occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists, teachers, parents, and individuals. A team approach helps determine what physical adaptations or special equipment are needed, the best teaching approach, and necessary safety precautions. A questionnaire is included that can be used as a guideline for finding out from individual clients what, if any, adaptations need to be made. The questionnaire includes cognitive questions (thinking process, attention span, and ways the individual releases tension); social questions (speech and language); sensorimotor questions (physical abilities and any sensory deficits); and safety precautions (seizures, sun exposure, feeding and drinking, allergies, medications, transferring from a wheelchair.)
