This report describes the Eisenhower Leadership Program, an approach to leadership learning that aims to educate students for democracy. Based on the premise that democracy at risk threatens the fabric of the national culture, the document presents five key elements considered essential for educating students to become democratic leaders. These elements are as follows: (1) establish a democratic environment in the school and classrooms; (2) engage students in critical thinking regarding problems they are asked to address; (3) make leadership learning a collaborative effort; (4) involve students in real learning experiences and situations outside the classroom; and (5) allow time and space for reflection. Recommendations for attaining these goals are provided via models enacted by participating Eisenhower Leadership Program schools.
