Aggression and Violence in Youth.
William Gladden Foundation, York, PA.
This booklet was written to provide an understanding of aggression and violence in youth. Its purpose is to help parents, professionals, and other concerned citizens prevent or reduce these potentially dangerous behaviors. The introduction notes that many experts agree that aggression and violence are on the rise in America. The first section of the booklet contains a set of questions and answers about aggression and violence, how and why children learn to be aggressive and violent, sex differences in aggression and violence, peer pressure, gangs, violence on television, alcohol and violence, and physical punishment. Other sections explain four stages of aggression and violence and list emotional and behavioral warning signs of aggression. A checklist is provided on common forms of aggression observed in problem children, including aggression as an attention getting device, as the acting-out of a mental disorder, as a result of overprotection, as a result of maturity fantasies, as a result of insecurity, as a result of effeminacy, and as a result of oral needs. Also included is a partial list of family conditions that can increase aggressive or violent behaviors. The next section contains a checklist of helpful suggestions about how parents can prevent or reduce aggressive and violent behaviors in their children. The booklet concludes with a list of agencies and professional to contact for help with aggressive and violent youth. (NB)
