A Manual for Parents and Professionals.
Gerber, Magda, Ed.
This collection of papers describes a way of viewing and caring for infants. Part I begins with practical suggestions for parents on such topics as loving, quality time, and day care centers. Part II explores Magda Gerber's work with Dr. Pikler, the Loczy Model of infant care, respecting infants, the Demonstration Infant Program, language development, appropriate curriculum for infants and toddlers, and stress and distress. Part III begins with speeches and articles by Emmi Pikler, M.D., who directed the work of the National Methodological Institute for Residential Nurseries in Budapest, and also contains papers by various members of Dr. Pikler's staff. Discussed are 25 years of observing infants in a residential center, promotion of optimal development in infant care centers, modern forms of hospitalism, developmental schedules stimulating adult educational attitudes, the examination of the social contacts of infants and young children reared together, basic conditions of and importance of person-oriented adult-child relationships, and feedings as one of the main scenes of the adult-child relationship. Appendices include announcements of eight "Loczy" films on infancy and a film series depicting examples of selective intervention and teaching adults to observe infants. The document also includes a description of the Resources for Infant Educarers organization and its short courses for child care professionals. (RH)
