The booklet examines the effects of parental and family stress on gifted children. Four areas of family turmoil are covered: (1) separation and divorce, (2) death and dying, (3) violence, and (4) serious family illness. Problems are addressed in terms of considerations for preschool, school-aged, and high school gifted students. The first section, on separation and divorce, urges parents to tell the truth, share feelings, and involve the child in decision making whenever possible. Death and dying issues include responses of anger, support of friends, and responses to teen suicide. Three positions are noted for gifted children in violent homes: floating, retreating, or playing savior. The importance of clarifying that the situation is not the child's fault is emphasized, and suggestions for dealing with the child's mistrust are reviewed. The final section considers ways to help gifted children whose families are affected by serious illness. (CL)
