Binding Operations in ARL Libraries. SPEC KIT 114.
Lanier, Don
This flyer/kit provides the results of a January 1985 Quick-SPEC survey, which, together with telephone and in-person interviews, was conducted to obtain information on the operations, organization, and staffing of library binding operations. Information was obtained from 18 of the 26 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) institutions surveyed; these libraries were chosen because they have sizeable binding operations with state-of-the-art practices. It was found that libraries are making more extensive use of commercial binders for routine, general run work, but they are also using a variety of binding techniques and other preservation treatments in-house, and developing appropriate standards for each. This kit contains 12 documents dealing with organization and administration, 3 descriptions of automated systems, 8 descriptions of binding treatments, and a list of selected readings. The 15 institutions whose documents are included in the kit are the University of California, Davis; University of Colorado; Columbia University; University of Connecticut; Duke University; University of Illinois; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; New York Public Library; University of North Carolina; Pennsylvania State University; Princeton University; Southern Illinois University; University of Texas; University of Utah; and University of Washington.
