The manual covers the design and implementation of respite care services for families with developmentally disabled members. An introductory chapter examines the concept of respite care, notes the benefits for families, providers, and community residential programs, and places the service as one part of a comprehensive array of family support services. Ten models of respite care in use throughout the nation are described in chapter 2, including sitter/companion programs, day care centers, parent co-ops, and use of beds in an existing group home. Eight steps in planning such a program are delineated in chapter 3, from defining a manageable area of service to appointing a coordinator. Recruitment, training, and supervision of providers are examined in a fourth chapter while a fifth examines the relationship with consumers. Two final chapters address evaluation aspects and liability. A sample packet of information to be completed by parents or guardians is appended. (CL)
