The paper describes assessment techniques, the process of aid selection, and therapy procedures with young nonverbal handicapped children. Assessment of such children requires an evaluation of the child's present means of communication, hearing, vision, receptive skills, and ability to use language (verbal, gestural, or graphic). Among factors to consider when assessing a physically handicapped nonverbal child are the limitations the handicap may have placed on normal experiences and test bias that may therefore result. Considerations in aid selection include the child's mobility, parent attitudes, cost effectiveness, and the availability of training personnel. In working with nonverbal children it is important to establish a consistent yes/no response that is understood by everyone who works with the child. Therapy should begin with prelinquistic skills; a receptive language program should follow. (PHR)
