Developed to aid agencies assisting the economically disadvantaged, unemployed, or underemployed in selecting good career information and the most useful career/occupational information systems, these guidelines present basic background on and criteria for evaluating career information and the systems which deliver the information. Preliminary topics discussed include the importance of career choice, need for quality career information to make that choice, and types of career information needed. Information types and formats, methods of information storage and retrievel, and problems and innovations in storing and using information are then discussed. The next two sections, the focus of the document, provide information on and suggest criteria for evaluating and selecting career information material and a career information system. These criteria for evaluating material are listed: what, why, who, when, where, how it was gathered, and how it is presented. Guidelines for selecting materials suggest that materials must be accurate, representative, attractive, keyed to client interests and abilities, and cost effective. Career information system evaluation and selection is discussed in terms of its components--information, delivery, and user services--and examination of the organization sponsoring and/or marketing the system. A final section discusses steps in implementing/organizing a system, including needs of potential user agencies and organizations, inventorying existing resources, and acquiring financial assistance.
