A Survey of Older Women As Candidates for Re-Entry at Northwestern University.
Johns, Yvonne
A survey of 7,500 older women living within commuting distance of Northwestern University was conducted to find possible candidates for a baccalaureate degree who had thought about returning to school. Women who belonged to volunteer organizations were sent a questionnaire asking about their educational achievements, future plans, and perceptions of Northwestern University. Of the 329 respondents who were interested in completing the undergraduate degree, 72 percent wanted to complete their education at Northwestern University but felt they could not do so because the university did not allow part-time study. Regardless of their own age, most respondents insisted upon the opportunity to take part-time classes under unit tuition and/or financial aid programs rather than give up their commitments as wives, mothers, and community volunteers. Data were also gathered on transfer student potential, barriers for returning, need for returning students programs, and interest in second baccalaureate and graduate degrees among the respondents surveyed. Qualitative survey findings revealed that older women were angry and frustrated that Northwestern University had not made them feel welcome with flexible scheduling and part-time classes in a returning students program for older students. Appendices include a list of volunteer organizations surveyed and detailed questionnaire findings and materials. (DC)
