Effective Involvement of School Volunteers. Handbook for Teachers. Partners for the 80's.
Mulligan, Dorothy, Ed.
The purpose of this handbook is to help the teacher learn to involve school volunteers creatively and effectively in educational programs. Twelve steps are presented that teachers should take to involve volunteers effectively: (1) assess your needs, (2) talk with teachers who have worked with school volunteers, (3) request a volunteer for the classroom, (4) orient volunteer to classroom policies and procedures, (5) take time to know your volunteer, (6) match the volunteer's skills with needs of the classroom, (7) establish good communications, (8) share student's progress with volunteer, (9) show a continuing appreciation for the volunteer's service, (10) plan evaluation to include the volunteer and the students, (11) encourage your volunteer to seek training opportunities, and (12) set a good example. Appended material includes a list of 59 ways volunteers can help at the elementary school level, a list of 22 ways volunteers can help at the secondary school level, a sample teacher request form, an initial teacher/volunteer conference checklist, a list of twenty-five ways to show appreciation to the volunteer, and self-evaluation questions for the volunteer and teacher.
