Basic information about heart disease and functional capacity assessment and its application to activity/job counseling are presented in this handbook for vocational rehabilitation counselors. Sections include the following: impact of heart disease; basic anatomy and physiology (e.g., the heart, pulmonary circulation, causes of cardiac pain, and cause of rhythm abnormalities); types of heart disease (e.g., congenital, acquired, rheumatic, pericardial, pulmonary, and primary myocardial); causes of disability in cardiac disease (e.g., heart failure, arrhythmias, and psychosocial adaptations); evaluation of disability (e.g., basic required data, additional procedures including stress evaluation, Holter monitor, cardiac catheterization, and vocational evaluation); and rehabilitation in cardiac disease (principles of cardiac rehabilitation; in-hospital rehabilitation; post-hospital rehabilitation; and medical, surgical, psychosocial, and vocational management).
