Communication Skills: The Foundation for Meaningful Group Intervention in School-Based Programs
Dodge, Ellen Pritchard
Topics in Language Disorders, v24 n2 p141 Apr-Jun 2004
Speech-language pathologists face many service delivery challenges in school-based settings. Traditionally operating from a disorder model, the school speech-language pathologist rarely takes advantage of the opportunity to work with students who may benefit from enhanced communication skills training. The Communication Lab approach is an 8-week program designed to facilitate partnership between the classroom teacher and the speech-language pathologist to work toward goals that will improve the classroom environment and facilitate students' academic and social success. The program is based on a group treatment approach that takes advantage of the social-communication context of the regular classroom to improve the skills of all the participating students.
