Strategies for finding a job internship, especially those particular to Kalamazoo College, are described in this handbook. After an introduction discussing the benefits of a liberal arts education, the benefits to employers and students of cooperative education and internships are discussed. Details of Kalamazoo College's internship program are described. Strategies for assessing one's accomplishments, skills, strengths, values, and interests are included to assist students in assessing work and experience goals. Job search strategies and how to build an information network are discussed. Application and acceptance guidelines for internship positions are discussed. Resumes and cover letters are described in detail, including key words to be used, preparation and duplication tips, and tips for creating effective cover letters and other job search correspondence. Sample resumes and letters are included. Telephone and in-person interviewing techniques are described. Advice on finding housing while on the job is given. Advice for interns newly on the job is provided in the areas of dress, promptness, rules, attitude, attendance, respecting the time of others, dependability, resentment, communications, discrimination and sexual harassment, and leaving a bad situation. Tips are given on dealing with work assignments, evaluating one's own progress, and getting to know the area. The usefulness of finding a mentor on the job is discussed. (ABL)
