This document is a self-help booklet designed to help individuals quit smoking. Information, as well as inspiration, is provided in the form of pointers under these topics: (1) preparing yourself for quitting; (2) knowing what to expect; (3) involving someone else; (4) ways of quitting, including switching brands, cutting down on the number of cigarettes smoked, not smoking automatically, and making smoking inconvenient and unpleasant; (5) things to do just before and on the day of quitting; (6) things to do immediately after quitting, including avoiding temptation, finding new habits, what to do when the ex-smoker gets the "crazies," and facts about gaining weight; (7) what happens after you quit smoking, including immediate rewards and effects, long-range benefits, withdrawal symptoms and activities that might help; (8) quitting for keeps, including dealing with and dampening urges, not-smoking as habit-forming, and relapse; (9) marking progress; and (10) common rationalizations.
