Guidelines concerning the development, supervision, and implementation of seventh and eighth grade mathematics curricula are presented in this document. Section one gives a brief overview of the grades K through six curriculum, providing terminal objectives for grade six. Section two describes traditional tasks in the curriculum for grades seven and eight and discusses Algebra I. The third section addresses specific curriculum components: (1) variables and literal expressions; (2) equations and inequalities; (3) geometry; (4) measurement; (5) probability and combinations; (6) problem solving; (7) applications; (8) functions and relations; (9) statistics; (10) technology; and (11) numbers and numeration. Each component is discussed, with specific objectives and sample problems and activities. The fourth section identifies and discusses questions related to specific and crucial issues in mathematics education. They are: (1) time on task; (2) calculators and computers; (3) mathematics anxiety; (4) sex equity; (5) ability grouping; (6) learning disabilities; and (7) teacher preparation. Also, the Second International Study of Mathematics is reviewed. The appendices contain resource material for each of the issue areas except mathematics anxiety, and also the solution to problems given as examples in section three. (JM)
