Written for women on Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) who are seeking employment, this booklet is designed to introduce the possibility of taking a non-traditional job (a job traditionally held by men). Chapter 1 discusses the dilemma women heads of households face in finding jobs that will adequately support their families. Chapter 2 outlines the advantages and disadvantages of non-traditional jobs compared to traditional jobs. The third chapter is designed to help the reader define her job skills and interests, especially as they relate to non-traditional jobs. Detailed descriptions of some non-traditional jobs are given in chapter 4. The next chapter describes training options for non-traditional occupations, including the WIN (Work Incentive Program) and CETA (Comprehensive Employment and Training Act) programs for which women on AFDC are eligible. Strategies for finding and landing a non-traditional job are presented in the sixth chapter. Chapter 7 covers changes in AFDC, Medicaid, and other benefits when a woman gets a job; ways to arrange for child care; and legal rights on the job. The final chapter is primarily directed toward employment counselors and offers techniques for counseling and placing women in non-traditional jobs. (BM)
