Parents and Educators: Partners in Individualized Educational Program Planning for Handicapped Students. An In-Service Training Package.
Shaffer, Joyce D.; Bell, Jane E.
The document presents a modular in-service training package for parents and educators of handicapped children, to assist their collaboration in the development of individualized education programs (IEPs). Each of the five modules consists of descriptions of specific activities, the materials needed for the activities, and the time required to complete the module (total time is approximately 12 hours). Activities described include introduction and evaluation, plus mock IEP staffing; developing solutions for identified problems; developing effective communication and interpersonal skills by means of a jargon test and role identification exercise; indentifying timing and setting problems and their solutions; examining interaction patterns; and developing and evaluating an implementation plan. Included in the eight appendixes are a self-administered due process guide, a staffing evaluation form, and a parent's guide to information-gathering. (DLS)
