Developed in West Virginia as part of a statewide effort to improve reading achievement through a competency based staff development program, this inservice instructional packet on word recognition is one of five designed to present classroom teachers with the essential competencies and learner outcomes involved in developmental reading. The materials in this packet aim specifically to provide knowledge of word recognition skills; to assess word recognition skill development; to develop instructional strategies for word recognition; and to evaluate instructional activities in terms of word recognition skill development. The packet also contains guidelines for conducting the inservice program; the gestalt, rationale, objectives, and schedule for the program; a self-evaluation record; transparencies on word recognition; an example of informal assessment; and an evaluation record for the inservice program.
