This manual is the final report of a study on the development of methods and programs to promote physical fitness among police officers. In twelve chapters the following topics are covered: (1) principles of exercise; (2) research methodology used to compile this manual; (3) results of physical fitness evaluation of program volunteers; (4) descriptions of the twenty week experimental exercise programs; (5) results and discussion of the twenty week experimental exercise programs; (6) attitudes and perceptions toward health and physical exercise; (7) results of national surveys on the number and type of physical fitness programs offered by police departments to their sworn officers; (8) administrative and developmental considerations and recommendations; (9) legal issues of concern to law enforcement officers and administrators; (10) medical screening and fitness evaluation programs; (11) recommended exercise program prescription; and (12) implementation experiences in other settings: business and industry. Appended are a medical history questionnaire, an informed consent form, and an aerobics exercise log. A bibliography for further reference is included. (JD)
