This handbook is designed to assist staff development leaders in planning and conducting K-12 in-service or pre-service legal education courses based on the "Law In A Free Society" curriculum. The handbook is organized into four sections. Section one contains background information on the "Law In a Free Society" program including a discussion of the program's objectives, rationale, and training and classroom materials. Section two describes how to initiate and administer the teacher training programs and discusses the personnel, teaching methods, and instructional materials needed. Section three very briefly discusses how to use community resources in the training program. Section four, which comprises the bulk of the document, contains step-by-step course outlines which can be used in the teacher training courses. Teachers learn about the concepts to be taught through reading, group discussion, mock trials, debates, legislative hearings, and panel discussions. Teachers develop and field test lesson plans, and use "Law In a Free Society" materials with their students and describe their experiences with the curricula in the workshop sessions. The Appendix contains guidelines for teaching methods suggested for use in the in-service and pre-service courses. (Author/RM)
