The Motivation Advance Process. Leader's Guide.
Chitayat, Deanna; Berens, Gloria
Motivation Advance Process (MAP) is a small group process designed to increase achievement motivation through emphasizing the strengths and assets of each individual. The process requires skilled leadership to guide the participants towards a new and positive view of their lives. The purpose of this manual is to provide counselors with both leadership training in MAP and an understanding of the program's rationale. The MAP program was developed by behavioral scientists, psychologists and educators at the Stone Foundation in Chicago in the 1960's. These professionals were concerned with influence of negative feedback and criticism on self-concept development and the consequent effect on achievement in contemporary American society. The underlying hypothesis was that most people used only a fraction of their potential in their daily lives. It was felt that untapped inner resources could be liberated through enhancing people's positive feelings about themselves. The program, directed toward non-patient populations ("healthy" or "normal" groups), was first implemented with college students. In recent years, it has been used with a wide variety of groups, including management personnel, housewives, the elderly, school administrators, and student teachers. Research findings have shown it to be an effective method for improving self-concept. (Author/JL)
