Streets: A Program to Develop Awareness of the Street Environment. Teacher's Guide [And] Student's Workbook.
Cvijanovic, Serge; Spero, Galila
The environmental education unit is intended for use by elementary school classroom teachers as they develop and implement programs to help students become visually aware of street environments. The teacher's guide is presented in two major sections. Section I consists primarily of reading and observing exercises. Lessons are entitled "What is a Street?""Shapes and Sizes of Streets;""Places on Streets;""Street Furniture;""Building Surfaces and Ground Surfaces;" and "Buildings on Streets." Each lesson lists objectives, concepts, and activities which involve students in finding dictionary definitions, making scrap books, giving slide shows, working with maps, taking field trips to local streets, and making lists of buildings and streets with specific characteristics. Section II focuses on skill development activities such as making pictures and scale models of neighborhood streets using cut outs of row houses, single-family dwellings, trees, and apartment houses. A section of notes to architects and other design professionals who might be contacted to work with the program concludes the Teacher's Guide. The Student Workbook follows the same chapter format as the Teacher's Guide. Each chapter presents numerous photographs of city and street scenes, textual information, vocabulary words, lists of activities, and thought questions. (Author/DB)
