A Guide to Consumer Action.
Nelson, Helen E.; And Others
Designed for individuals and groups seeking to organize consumer activities, this guide focuses on how to build consumer competence, how to organize others, where to get training, and how to influence policy makers. Chapter I discusses how to educate oneself for consumerism by using product-rating periodicals, libraries, public consumer agencies, television, and radio. Twelve steps are listed for filing a complaint, and various types of solving more serious consumer problems are described (government agencies, business or trade associations, and consumer groups). A brief glossary of dispute settlement language is also presented. Chapter II presents studies of the successful organization of seven consumer groups and discusses incorporation, funding sources (grants), and affiliation with other groups. Further sources of information (publications and groups) are suggested. The advice of eight consumer leaders on group organization and operation conclude the chapter. Chapter III describes two additional activities for consumer groups: consumer advocacy training programs through universities, consumer groups, cooperatives, and industry; and participation as consumer representatives in government and industry policy making forums. Notes and availability information on various supplementary publications are interspersed throughout. (JH)
