Community Crisis Intervention and the Boston School Desegregation Effort: Case Study of a Training Program.
Batson, Ruth M.; Peters, Lyda S.
Court ordered school desegregation in Boston resulted in racial conflict. In response to the psychological problems generated by this conflict, psychiatrists from Boston University Medical School developed a crisis intervention program designed to provide needed support for children, parents, and school staff. The program's design was based on: (1) a sensitivity to and awareness of the needs and social characteristics of the citizens; (2) a recognition that an effective preventative program would require training in community mental health and crisis intervention principles; (3) a broad understanding of the causes of aggression, violence and prejudice; and (4) a knowledge of the techniques for managing group, interpersonal and individual interactions. This manual is directed toward training mental health workers to deal with the types of social and psychological crises which can develop in academic institutions. Methods involved in establishing a training program are outlined. Suggestions for recruitment of trainees are offered. A number of themes related to school desegregation are presented as they were covered in a series of lectures. Other areas addressed include the work study phase of the program, in-class discussions, legal rights and responsibilities of mental health workers, and the roles of outside institutions. Suggestions for dealing with crises are printed in both Spanish and English. (Author/GC)
