This program consists of three components. The Learning Through Piano component is an innovative program of group piano instruction for elementary children. Music for Little People is designed to assist the self-contained classroom teacher in planning and implementing comprehensive music experiences for primary children. The Success Through Strings component is an adaptation of the philosophy and techniques of Shinichi Suzuki in a program of individual and group string instrument instruction. The selection and design of instructional goals, objectives and learning activities for the programs stem from the knowledge of how children learn. An important dimension of the programs is to provide an ideal setting for students to explore and develop appreciation for cultural pluralism as it is reflected in both folk and composed music. During the eight years of program development, evaluation studies indicated both musical and nonmusical growth of the students in the program. Studies indicated that the musical achievement of Title I children in the piano and string programs was significantly higher than that of non Title I students in the traditional program. In the Music for Little People program, kindergarten extended pilot test data for 1975-76 indicates that 80% of the children met 100% of the objectives. For three consecutive years, Title I string and piano students scored significantly higher than their classmates on standardized tests. (Author/AM)
