Designed for use in secondary economics or other social studies classes, this kit presents instructional materials and replications of primary source documents on the development of the labor movement in America. The documents are divided into four major areas of study: the growth of organized labor, the function of a union, labor and politics, and labor and technology. The document begins with the historical development of the labor union which originated with the shoemakers of the 1840s and 1850s and concludes with a 1971 speech about rediscovering American labor. Documents in the kit represent various viewpoints ranging from organizers of unions to management. Following each document presentation are questions for inquiry and discussion. A teacher's guide containing background information about the documents precedes the documents section. The kit contains a glossary of commonly used terms. Six large posters depicting various aspects of organized labor are available in the hard copy version. (Author/JR)
