In an attempt to begin assessing perceived needs of Washington State University students living in this institution's residence halls, the Department of Residence Living sought the responses to a 106-question survey. The general residential living areas assessed were: Personal Development; Residence Hall and General University Social and Recreational Environment; University and Residence Hall Policies; Housing: Facilities, Maintenance, Vending, Services; and Financial Aid and Employment Opportunities. One thousand nine hundred sixty nine (1,969) completed usable questionnaires for a response rate of 49.2%. In general, men and women responded similarly in most areas studied. When examined by hall type, respondents from coeducational halls (COED) did not respond as predicted in a number of areas: noise, finding help with personal problems, less satisfaction with hall government are a few. Small Single Sex (S.S.S.) halls appear to be able to overcome obvious physical problems with a sense of community that does not seem as strong in the Large Single Sex (L.S.S.) or COED halls. Although this study is college-specific, it could be used effectively as a model for other residence halls interested in ascertaining and responding to students' needs. (Author)
