The guide contains suggestions for the selection, repair, and care of woodwind instruments and equipment; goals and procedures for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of study; and specific annotated reference lists. The book is arranged into five major sections by type of instrument: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon. Each section contains (1) an introduction discussing historical background of the instrument, selection, care, repair, and tuning procedures; (2) method criteria; (3) teaching and learning techniques for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels; and (4) annotated bibliographies of relevant books, methods, periodicals, recordings, and films and filmstrips. The longest section on teaching techniques focuses on breath control, fingering, tone quality, articulation, range, and style. All sections emphasize the need for students to clean instruments regularly and properly, and to practice in groups as well as alone. A final section contains a bibliography of 59 general resources such as instrument repair manuals, other teaching guides, and indexes of musical wind instrument makers. (AV)
