This is the first of 11 sections of a complete, structured, and detailed study guide proposed for M.A. candidates. This section covers the 16th century and is entitled "Descubrimiento y Conquista" ("Discovery and Conquest"). Suggested readings are accompanied by lists of sources and reference works chosen for usefulness and readability. Dominant themes and motifs of Latin American literature are traced through different periods, authors, and genres. The guide is not intended to substitute for histories, anthologies or texts, but rather to complement them. It may be particularly useful for small departments with a limited range of course offerings. (Author/DB)
