Business in Our Community. Grade Three, Unit Three, 3.3. Comprehensive Social Studies Curriculum for the Inner City.
Keller, Sister Mary Rita
Unit three of the third grade level of the FICSS series (Focus on Inner City Social Studies -- SO 008 271) continues the study of some of the major social institutions which affect students' lives. The unit focuses specifically on the local business community. The ways in which businesses get started, the kinds of local businesses, some problems of local business and labor, and steps to correct some of the problems are unit concerns. Some of the learning activities emphasize having students obtain information in the community first hand. For example, in one such activity the students find out about the operation of a small local business. The unit is planned to cover six weeks, but enought material is included so that the teacher can expand the time limit or be selective in what is included in the study. The format of the unit includes a general introduction to the program; suggested teaching procedures and strategies; essential source materials; knowledge, skill, and behavioral objectives; learning activities; and additional student and teacher resources.
