Language Usage I. Curriculum Guide for French, German, Russian, and Spanish.
North Colonie Central School District, Newtonville, NY.
This curriculum guide is designed for use in the first part of a 2-year audiolingual language program by French, Spanish, German, and Russian teachers, department supervisors and outside evaluators. The primary objective of the Language Usage course is to enable the learner to make his basic needs known to native speakers of the target language. The greatest emphasis is placed on speaking skills, with the intention of preparing the student to use the target language in conversational situations typically encountered while traveling. Reading and writing skills are emphasized only to the degree that they would assist the student while traveling. The guide is made up of 50 sequential units, divided into seven blocks. Each block lists behavioral objectives, suggested activities, and evaluative procedures. The teacher must write his own drill materials based on the suggestions given here, which are in English. No student text or exercise book is required, but each student uses a 60-minute blank cassette tape as an "oral notebook." The guide is intended for use with 50 overhead visuals and 50 master cassette tapes, which must be purchased separately, but it can be used without these aids. (PM)
