Poetic Possibilities: Using Poetry to Enhance Literacy Learning
Israel, Susan E., Ed.
International Reading Association (NJ3)
The literacy-themed poems in this anthology--reprinted from the premier journal for literacy educators, "The Reading Teacher"--give teachers, literacy coaches, and parents a new way to enhance literacy learning. Use this book to: (1) Integrate poetry into classroom lessons to develop students' lifelong love of reading and writing; (2) Motivate students of all ages with opportunities for meaningful reading and writing; (3) Encourage students and colleagues to write poetry; and (4) Promote professional reflection, growth, and change. Each poem is accompanied by prompts to get students thinking and by a literacy application to help the teacher use the poem in the classroom. The reader will also find ways to make meaningful connections with literacy and additional resources to prompt further thinking or research on the poem's topic. Following a preface, this book is divided into five sections: (1) Discovering the Value of Reading; (2) Making Connections to Support Developing Readers; (3) Motivating Future Authors; (4) Honoring the Special Voices Within; and (5) Inspiring Exemplary Reading Teachers. A list of references; an author-subject index; and a poem index are also included. ["Poetic Possibilities: Using Poetry to Enhance Literacy Learning" was edited with Michelle M. Israel.]
