Talking about Touching: A Personal Safety Curriculum, Grades 1-3. Teacher's Guide.
Harms, Ruth; Davis, Diane; Mackey, Andrea
This teacher's guide is for a curriculum that focuses on teaching children basic skills that will help keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. Using the materials in the "Talking about Touching" kit, parents, child care providers, and teachers can work together to provide the rules, information, encouragement, and practice that children need to help protect themselves. This manual begins with an overview that includes background information on child sexual abuse and research into its causes and prevention. Implementation is discussed, and suggestions are presented for involving families. The following three units are presented for each of grades one through three: (1) four lessons on "Personal Safety"; (2) six lessons on "Touching Safety"; and (3) four lessons on"Assertiveness and Support." Each lesson is presented with a story card and photograph, and each builds on and reinforces the skills learned in the previous lesson. The curriculum includes a book about a girl who learned to use the "Touching Rule." The appendix contains handouts, scenarios, and transparency masters for various lessons, as well as a list of 47 children's books related to the curriculum and a list of 18 adult resources. (SLD)
