The Ultimate Spelling Quiz Book: Over 100 Tests, Super Tests, and Killer Spelling Bees.
Grambs, David
Not aimed at beginning or elementary spellers, this book contains more than 100 tests interspersed with various informative items, pertinent quotations, amusing anecdotes, and lightly historical discourses relating to the orthography of English. The tests in the book represent a rather extensive vocabulary (a person who takes all of the tests is matched against more than 2500 words), but they are meant to be fun to take and interesting to study. The book can be used independently (answers are provided), but it can also be used in class by high school English teachers or by college freshman composition instructors. The book is divided into sections entitled: "About the Tests"; "Scoring Yourself on the Tests"; "Why Is English Spelling So Confused? (A Brief History)"; "Who Was Webster"; "Caution, Dictionaries at Variance"; "Misspellers Unite--If You Can (Spelling Reform)"; "Have Misspellings, Will Print"; "Dissipating at the Soda Fountain (A Brief History of the Spelling Bee)"; "You Say CARE-FLEE and I Say CARE-FULL-EE (Spelling Pronunciations)"; "Of Course You Know What 'Epyllion' Means, But Can You Spell IT? (The Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee)"; "Ultimate Spelling Quiz Book College"; "Spelling Rules"; "Ultimate Quizzes (A Final Round of Tests)"; and "Answers." (NKA)
