This handbook is intended for English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) providers who train volunteers as ESL teachers and use them in their own or other programs. The handbook offers both an overview of the process of developing a volunteer program and some concrete suggestions for each step. The model from which it is drawn is that used at the International Institute of Boston (IIB). The first part of the handbook discusses the recruitment and selection of volunteers, including such aspects as clarifying goals, what volunteers can do, identifying the volunteer pool, publicity and outreach, and selecting appropriate volunteers. The second part describes the IIB training model and outlines a strategy for planning a training program, setting realistic goals, and observing trainees. Part three addresses placement and supervision of volunteers, and the fourth part looks at considerations in program management, including the team approach, identifying and designating tasks, and task analysis. Appended materials include standards for volunteer organizations; facts on the adult literacy initiative; a list of Retired Senior Volunteer Professionals; sample ads; a press release; and sample forms for application, agenda, job description, lesson plan, seminar evaluation, seminar certificate, workshop format, and program evaluation.
