A discussion of role-playing as a teaching technique in pre-service language teacher education suggests procedures for acquainting teacher trainees with role-playing and preparing them to write their own role-plays. The method aims to overcome trainee resistance to group work. Exposure to role-playing takes three forms: (1) trainees view a film about group work in the classroom and discuss it in a specified format, similar to a debate; (2) trainees participate in microteaching, using role-cards to define the "learners'" roles; and (3) trainees engage in traditional role-playing, not necessarily related to teaching. It is suggested that this method allows trainees to see the potential for learning in role-playing and to focus on the value of language in the exercise. Sample follow-up activities are recommended. Specific ways to use this role-playing experience to encourage trainees to invent their own exercises are outlined. (MSE)
