Materials are provided for a unit to teach students to recognize the importance of labor in the growth of the economy. The 1- to 2-week unit is intended for a 12th-grade economics class. The lesson plan details concepts to be covered, rationale, instructional objectives, materials that will be used, teacher procedures, and student evaluation. These materials for use with the unit are provided: handout on the Industrial Revolution, handout for an assignment to write newspaper articles with writers sympathetic to unions and employers, handout with a timeline for organized labor, a simulation game about the behavior of guitar-making firms in competition, and a unit test.
