Teaching Assistance. A Handbook of Teaching Ideas.
California Univ., San Diego.
A handbook to help teaching assistants (TAs) define and implement teaching goals and to present materials effectively is presented as part of the Teaching Assistant Development Program at the University of California at San Diego. A checklist gives 20 skills that a TA needs to develop to be a good teacher. Behavioral learning goals and process goals are considered, and exercises are provided to help the TA identify teaching goals. Additional contents include: a teaching objectives planning sheet; an exercise to help students think systematically and creatively; a list of teaching strategies to develop organized thinking and creativity; suggestions for leading student discussions; ideas to encourage student participation; ways to respond to students' ideas productively; how to present material effectively in lectures; 13 alternative classroom formats (e.g., census-taking, brainstorming, peer group teaching, discovery format, role playing); suggestions on how to get good feedback on teaching; information on what to do when students need additional help; Teaching Activity Profiles for Section TAs and Laboratory TAs; and a Self-Assessment Questionnaire for Students.
