Guidelines are provided for teachers who assist early French immersion students with learning problems. Learning assistance is intended for pupils who are having trouble keeping up with their class and could benefit from short periods of individual or small group instruction. The functions of the learning assistance teacher include diagnostic assessment, direct and indirect instruction, consultation with other school personnel, preparation of instructional programs, record keeping, and such administrative activities as scheduling. Problems with psychomotor functions, perception, visual and auditory memory, language development, and mathematics are discussed. A bibliography of instructional materials, an English language version of a portion of the guidelines, and a description of the referral process are appended. (RW)
