This manual is intended to assist local school authorities in California in providing the required course in instruction in first aid practices for school bus drivers. While it deals with basic principles of handling serious medical emergencies, major emphasis is on minor injuries or illnesses that are most likely to occur while students are riding on school buses. Chapter 1 focuses on determining the course and plan of action, including evaluating the scene and circumstances and determining actions to be taken and their correct order. The next sixteen chapters focus on these illnesses/injuries or situations the school bus driver is most likely to be required to deal with: (1) emergencies of heart and circulation system; (2) wounds, bleeding, and bruises; (3) breathing and airway maintenance; (4) skeletal injuries and disorders; (5) spinal injuries; (6) head injuries; (7) transportation and carries; (8) unconsciousness, fainting, and convulsions; (9) shock; (10) poisoning and drug overdose; (11) medical emergencies; (12) thermal, chemical, and electrical injuries; (13) injuries to special organs; (14) foreign bodies; (15) bites and stings; and (16) psychiatric emergencies. In addition to informative materials, charts are often provided which list signs and symptoms and the action which should be taken. Chapter 18 summarizes ten important recommendations. (YLB)
