Research is a process by which people discover or create new knowledge about the world in which they live. The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Affiliated Fairs are research (data) driven. Students design research projects that provide quantitative data through experimentation followed by analysis and application of that data. This brief document provides tips to students interested in participating in science fairs. It describes the stages necessary to produce good scientific experiments; choosing and researching topics; and planning and conducting experiments. It describes the elements of a successful project. This includes maintaining a project data book; preparing a research paper; writing an abstract; and catching the attention of judges by using visual displays. The brief also describes how judges evaluate student projects and the questions judges ask during interviews.
