Talking about Touching: A Personal Safety Curriculum. Preschool- Kindergarten (Ages 4-6). Teacher's Guide.
Harms, Ruth
"Talking about Touching" for preschool and kindergarten is a curriculum that focuses on teaching children basic skills that will help them keep safe from dangerous or abusive situations. The content and method of instruction in the curriculum were developed using current research on child abuse prevention and social learning theory. Suggestions are made for involving families in personal safety education. This manual begins with an overview of the curriculum for children aged 4 through 6, background material on sexual abuse and abuse prevention research, and the theoretical foundations of the curriculum. Suggestions are given for curriculum implementation, and the personal safety lessons are described. These deal with automobile and fire safety, getting lost, sexual abuse, and other types of child abuse. Information for teachers is also given for the curriculum's book about a child who learns the rule about personal touching and a video about a boy who uses the touching rule to prevent potential abuse. An appendix includes a "Seatbelt Song," a list of 42 books for children, and an 18-item adult resource list. (SLD)
