This book contains 16 stories that chronicle the history and culture of the Cheyenne people. Intended for grades 3-8, the stories present an alternative viewpoint on historical events and thus provide a more balanced understanding of the Cheyenne and other Native peoples. The stories are told chronologically, from creation to the present, as seen through the eyes of Old Nam Shin (grandfather) and a young girl named Shadow. Story themes include Cheyenne beliefs; "How the Animals and Other Things Came to Be"; "How the Cheyenne Got Horses"; "Stories of Magic and Medicine Men"; "History and Heroes"; the war with the U.S. Army; defeat and destruction of the buffalo; and imprisonment of 31 Cheyenne warriors in Fort Marion, Florida. The book also includes discussion questions and class activities with each story, as well as vocabulary in English and Cheyenne, recommended additional readings, photographs, maps, and an index.
