Peace Corps, Ashgabat (Turkmenistan).
This manual is designed for the Russian language training of Peace Corps volunteers serving in Turkmenistan, and focuses on daily communication skills needed in that context. It consists of nine topical lessons, each containing several brief dialogues targeting specific language competencies, and exercises. Text is entirely in Russian, except for lesson titles and competencies. Lesson topics and competencies include: greetings (making acquaintance, introductions, discussing personal well-being, leaving politely); speaking to a host (asking and answering personal questions, describing family, describing housing, requesting privacy, clarifying family responsibilities); food (identifying local food, expressing likes and dislikes); shopping (asking prices, bargaining, buying food, paying and receiving change, asking assistance, clothing); asking location and giving and receiving directions; transportation (seeking public transportation, purchasing tickets, riding a bus or taxi); communications (local and international phone calls, requesting a phone bill, mailing a letter, sending a telegram, opening a bank account); health (describing illness, answering questions about health); and social situations (beginning a conversation, discussing weather, discussing work, school, celebrating holidays).
